Signal Word is a fun way to practice key vocabulary, putting the word into long-term memory unconsciously through physical movement. Using the signal words will speed transitions and focus students’ attention on directions. Here is an example of using the science vocabulary (solids, liquids and gases) as the signal words in my fifth grade Chinese Immersion class. Students created their own 3D book with math facts about themselves (such as shoes size, birth date, age, favorite book and number of family members) in Chinese.
Pictorial input chart is used to introduce content information and vocabulary about the unit in a visual way that maximizes brain imprinting. This is an example from my first grade Chinese literacy class.
Sentence Patterning Chart is a chart which guides students to learn and reinforce vocabulary and sentences structures in context through chanting or singing. These are examples from my first and fifth grade Chinese literacy classes.
Students in first grade Chinese Immersion classes created their own addition word problems in Chinese and represented the problem in various ways such as comparison bar, number bond/math mountain, and circle drawings.
